Review: Crystal Palace Overground Festival

Crystal Palace Overground Festival

We nipped along to the last day of the Crystal Palace Overground Festival, which set up residence on 26th June in Crystal Palace Park.

It’s now in its 8th year and relies pretty much entirely on volunteers and sponsorship from local communities so it’s great to see it thriving each year upon this alone.

It had all the factors you’d expect from a good old-fashioned summer fete: food and drinks stalls, vintage clothing and homeware, bunting, a knobbly knees competition (poor Malcolm was robbed, we say).

We tucked into a Chilli Dog and Double Shakey from Shakey’s Diner – at £5 and £8 respectively it was a handsome feed that was worth the short amount of time we queued.

Booze wise, Late Knights Brewery had pitched up and we sampled St. Peter’s lager – light but with a tangy amber taste. If you like summer ales, we suggest you give this a try. They came in these mini pitchers (not too dissimilar to measuring jugs) which came with a £1 deposit.

Highlights from the stalls were Violet Betty, a vintage clothing company, and NewVintage.co.uk for antique homewares (you can see a theme developing here).

We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for similar outdoor activities – we’ll next be at the Lambeth Country Show on 19th July.

Flowers: Sherree Francis, Streatham

Always a delight to receive flowers, especially when they’re this beautiful.

(Shame the reason was illness but what can you do). The purchaser of these gorgeous blooms reported that the florist at Sherree Francis was very helpful. We wouldn’t know the price, it’s rude to ask, but we’re guessing it’s not on the cheap side.  Several days on, the flowers are still thriving – we love the dusky, delicate colours. It’s a right pain when we have to take them out of their cellophane… Upon looking at their website we note they also deliver champagne and food hampers – now that is a weekly delivery we’d like every Friday…

In fact, SwishJunction found itself in a ‘first world problem’ situation this week as we have just one wide vase but two bouquets of flowers delivered (told you). However nowhere in Streatham seemed to sell a simple, wide vase. We lacked the energy to pursue it further… if anyone knows of a shop that sells home furnishings like this we’d love to know about it.

Tiger Lilly Florists, Balham

A short but sweet (and pretty) post. It’s nice what a 6 month wedding anniversary will bring. This beautiful bouquet is from Tiger Lilly, a mixture of gerberas, tulips, eucalyptus and the most beautiful smelling white roses. Pictured below is the bouquet upon delivery, then a day after with a little help from the sunshine.

For a more economically sound way to brighten up the living room we’ve taken to buying a fresh bunch of tulips from Petals in Balham each Saturday (on Hildreth Street facing the main high street), plus Sainsbury’s in Balham always does a good deal on daffs that seem to last the week. Hurrah for Spring…
